Development of Innovative Pedagogy

The key role of a teacher is to teach, which can be understood as meaning to facilitate learning of some target curriculum. Teaching is therefore intimately tied to notions of learning and there is a sense that if students do not learn then whatever the teacher is doing does not deserve the label of ‘teaching’. The use of innovative methods in educational institutions has the potential not only to improve education, but also to empower people, strengthen governance and galvanize the effort to achieve the human development goals for the country.

Traditional Teaching Method: In the pre-technology education context the teacher is the sender, the educational material is the information and the student is the receiver of the information. In terms of the delivery medium, the educator can deliver the message via the “chalk-and-talk” method and LCD projector transparencies. This learning perspective is a popular technique, which has been used for decades as an educational strategy in all institutions of learning. Basically teacher controls the instructional process, the content is delivered to the entire class and the teacher tends to emphasize factual knowledge.

Innovative Teaching Methods: Following innovative learning methods are initiated and implemented by the faculty for students to learn in a better manner.

  • Description of method with Benefits:

Flipped classroom is a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter.

  • To develop a holistic approach to the key concepts of electronic components, circuits and concept behind it.
  • Description of the Innovative Method:

  • There is a scheme of assignment on the subject, which stands certain marks as seasonal for a student in each semester of the particular subject. I used it as an opportunity and instead of giving a paper pen assignment I prepared a list of practical / working model projects based on the key concepts which were mentioned in the syllabus i.e. 555 timer, op-amp, flip-flop based working models, which included the use of components such as diodes, capacitor, resistor, inductor, LDRs, transistors, potentiometer, transformers etc. It was allotted for a group of 2-4 students. This posed a real task ahead of students to thoroughly go through the working and role of the components, the concept behind circuitry and the art of calibrating it properly in due time.
  • Significant Result Observed:

  • At the end of the semester, each student was very well-versed with the concept of electronic components, circuits, op-amps in a practical sense which helped them to not only grasp the concept which was intended to be covered but also motivated them to explore more towards the direction of the innovative and interesting filed of electronics.

  • According to a report by FERMAT (Forum for electromagnetic research methods and application technologies) - In India, it is observed that the subjects like Electromagnetic Fields Theory, Antenna and Wave Propagation, Microwave Engineering etc. in undergraduate program of ECE is losing interest among the students due to its complicated mathematical nature and requirement of lot of imaginations. In spite of core subjects of the discipline the students adopt causal approach about these subjects and it remains effectively unexplored. As a result, RF communication based industries are lacking qualified antenna designers and microwave engineers to cater the needs.

  • Therefore, with the motivation developed during various faculty development programs on effective teaching following are some innovative teaching and learning practices experimented.
  • Demonstration using Industrial Standard Simulation Software:
    list type image
  • Description of the method - the subjects mentioned above based upon laws of electricity and magnetism which were established through experimentation. Therefore they require strong physical reasoning to establish the electromagnetic phenomenon. The parameters under investigations like radiation patterns require a strong imagination and thinking capability. Use of electromagnetic structure simulation software provided a virtual environment to observe and analyze the physical picture of every mathematical postulated one caries out.
  • list type image
  • Significant results observed - the demonstration using simulation software enables the students to develop clear understanding of the concept maintain the theoretical aspect in mind. It gives an understanding of the approach used by the industry to develop and design prototype or a product.
  • Group Assignments:
    list type image
  • Description of the method - the students were asked to submit a group assignments in the form of course project in a form to investigate any practical electromagnetic structure on several parameters and present the review. They were also asked to simulate the product on the EM Software available in the laboratory. The objective is to develop technical and soft management skills in the student.
  • list type image
  • Significant results observed - the students develop soft management skills like teamwork, coordination, decision making, organizational behavior, leadership, time management and presentation skills along with the enhancement in technical skills through in-depth investigation, product design, prototype, working in RF environment and calibration of test instruments.
  • Teaching through Research Papers:
    list type image
  • Description of the method - in order to encourage the students to read, understand and discuss the technical terms given in quality literature and understand its implementation in emerging technologies and recent advancement some of the topics from the syllabus are taught through research papers.
